Small personal loans are unsecured instalment loans of $50 to $1,500 that you apply for online, repay in equal payments over 3 to 12 months, and that by law cannot cost more than 35% APR. They fill the gap below the $3,000 to $5,000 minimums most banks set. BorrowNow.ca is a free service that sends your one application to lenders in our network.
Apply for a small personal loan: about 2 minutes, no score impact to apply
This is the same form as our Get Started page: the amount, your pay dates and a 60-second read-only bank check, then a written offer from a licensed lender showing the APR, the payment and the total cost. Nothing is pulled hard until you accept, and the cost table below shows what a small loan can legally cost first.
BorrowNow.ca is not a lender and never charges you. Lenders pay us a referral fee when we send them an application or when a referred loan is funded, as explained on our how we work and advertiser disclosure page. Filling in the form does not affect your credit score.

What counts as a small personal loan in Canada?
A small personal loan is an unsecured loan of $50 to $1,500 repaid in instalments over a few months, and the word “small” mostly means “below what a bank will write”. The big banks and most credit unions set a floor on their personal loans, so a borrower who needs $800 for a car repair is sent to a credit card, an overdraft or a payday lender. Small personal loans from online lenders exist for that gap.
We checked the published minimums on October 15, 2026. The amounts come from each lender’s own product page; terms change, so read the current page before you count on a figure.
| Lender | Smallest personal loan published | What that means for a $500 to $1,500 need |
|---|---|---|
| RBC personal loan | $5,000 | Too small to apply |
| CIBC personal loan | $3,000 | Too small to apply |
| Scotiabank personal loan | Not published on the product page; ask an advisor | Branch appointment first |
| goPeer (peer-to-peer) | $1,000 | Covers $1,000 to $1,500 only, with a 600+ score |
| Fairstone (non-bank lender) | $500 | Covers the band from $500 up |
| Online lenders in the BorrowNow network | $50 | Covers the whole band |
Three features separate small personal loans from the two products people usually fall back on. A payday loan is due in full on your next payday and costs $14 per $100 everywhere except Quebec. A credit card cash advance charges interest from the day you take it, at the card’s cash rate, plus a fee. A small personal loan spreads the amount over 3 to 12 equal payments, charges interest only on what you still owe, and must show you the APR and the total cost in dollars before you sign.
Within the band, two shapes are common. Lenders price loans under about $500 by the pay cycle, repaid over two to four paycheques. From $500 to $1,500 the loan is usually a monthly or per-paycheque instalment plan over 3 to 12 months, which is the shape this page prices. If you need more than $1,500, our personal loans page covers instalment loans up to $50,000.
What do small personal loans cost at the 35% cap?
At the legal maximum of 35% APR, $500 over 3 months costs $29.44 in interest, $1,000 over 6 months costs $104.54 and $1,500 over 12 months costs $299.28. Section 347 of the Criminal Code has capped the annual cost of credit at 35% since January 1, 2025, and that number includes most fees and charges, not just interest. The table shows the payment and the total interest at the cap for the four amounts people ask us for most.
| Small personal loans at 35% APR | 3 months | 6 months | 9 months | 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $500 | $176.48 a month, $29.44 interest | $92.04 a month, $52.24 interest | $63.97 a month, $75.73 interest | $49.98 a month, $99.76 interest |
| $750 | $264.72 a month, $44.16 interest | $138.07 a month, $78.42 interest | $95.95 a month, $113.55 interest | $74.97 a month, $149.64 interest |
| $1,000 | $352.96 a month, $58.88 interest | $184.09 a month, $104.54 interest | $127.94 a month, $151.46 interest | $99.96 a month, $199.52 interest |
| $1,500 | $529.45 a month, $88.35 interest | $276.13 a month, $156.78 interest | $191.90 a month, $227.10 interest | $149.94 a month, $299.28 interest |
Illustrations with equal monthly payments, standard amortization, rounded to the cent. 35% is the most a lender can lawfully charge; a lender offering 20% would charge $16.75 on the $500 loan over 3 months, $59.12 on the $1,000 loan over 6 months and $167.40 on the $1,500 loan over 12 months. Your lender must show you the APR, the total cost of borrowing and every payment in writing before you sign.
Here is the $1,000 loan over 6 months at the cap, month by month. Interest is charged only on what you still owe, so it falls every month while the payment stays the same.
| Month | Payment | Interest | Still owing after |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $184.09 | $29.17 | $845.08 |
| 2 | $184.09 | $24.65 | $685.64 |
| 3 | $184.09 | $20.00 | $521.55 |
| 4 | $184.09 | $15.21 | $352.67 |
| 5 | $184.09 | $10.29 | $178.87 |
| 6 | $184.09 | $5.22 | $0.00 |
Compare that with the two fallbacks. A $1,000 payday loan at the national limit of $14 per $100 costs $140 for about two weeks, which works out to 365% APR, and the whole $1,140 comes off one cheque. A $1,000 cash advance on a card at 22.99% plus a $5 fee costs about $135 if you clear it in equal payments over a year, and a card has no fixed end date, so most people take longer. The instalment loan at the cap costs $104.54, has an end date, and shows as paid when it is done. Our payday loan alternatives page ranks the cheaper routes by cost.
Try your own numbers. The calculator uses standard amortization at the APR you enter, capped at the 35% legal maximum, with no fees added.
$1,000 at 35% APR over 6 months: $184 a month, $1,105 repaid, $105 in interest.
Illustrative only: standard amortization, no fees. Your lender’s written offer shows the exact figures, and by law the APR cannot exceed 35%.
Two checks keep the price honest. Ask for the APR, not only the interest rate, because fees can push a low headline rate up. Then read the total cost of borrowing in dollars. Our cost of borrowing guide explains what counts toward the 35% limit and walks through a real disclosure line by line.

How big a payment fits your monthly budget?
A payment under 10% of your net monthly income is the line we suggest for small personal loans, because it leaves room for rent, food and the surprise that caused the loan in the first place. The table reads the payments from the cost table against four take-home incomes.
| Net monthly income | $500 over 3 months ($176.48) | $1,000 over 6 months ($184.09) | $1,500 over 12 months ($149.94) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $2,000 | 8.8% | 9.2% | 7.5% |
| $2,500 | 7.1% | 7.4% | 6.0% |
| $3,000 | 5.9% | 6.1% | 5.0% |
| $4,000 | 4.4% | 4.6% | 3.7% |
The 10% line is our guide, not a lender rule. Lenders look at the same thing from the other side: the payment against the deposits they can see in your account, after rent and the payments you already carry. If a $500 loan over 3 months pushes you past 10%, the same $500 over 6 months costs $22.80 more in interest and brings the payment down to $92.04.
Term is the other lever, and it cuts both ways. A shorter term means less interest and a bigger payment; a longer term means a smaller payment and more interest. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada makes the same point with a $2,000 loan at 19.99%: $2,220 repaid over 12 months, $2,700 over 36 and $3,180 over 60. Here is $1,000 at the cap across the terms small lenders offer.
| $1,000 at 35% APR | Monthly payment | Total repaid | Total interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 months | $352.96 | $1,058.88 | $58.88 |
| 6 months | $184.09 | $1,104.54 | $104.54 |
| 9 months | $127.94 | $1,151.46 | $151.46 |
| 12 months | $99.96 | $1,199.52 | $199.52 |
| 18 months | $72.20 | $1,299.60 | $299.60 |
| 24 months | $58.52 | $1,404.48 | $404.48 |
Pick the shortest term whose payment stays under your line, and ask whether the lender allows extra payments without a penalty. Most online lenders do, and every dollar paid early on a small personal loan saves interest from that day. Our page on loans with monthly payments goes deeper on reading a payment schedule.

Who qualifies for small personal loans?
Most adults with a job and a Canadian bank account qualify to apply for small personal loans, and the decision rests on income, not on a score. Lenders in our network ask for four things.
- Age of majority: 18 in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island; 19 in British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and the three territories.
- Job income: full-time or part-time employment pay deposited into your account. Lenders read the deposits through the bank check; a pay stub is rarely needed.
- A Canadian bank account in your name, open for at least a few months, so the lender can read it and send the e-Transfer to it.
- Room in the account: no run of returned payments in the last few months, and a balance that is not already spoken for by other lenders on payday.
Credit history is read, not scored. A lender can see a past collection or a consumer proposal and still approve a $500 loan if the deposits support the payment, because small personal loans are priced for that risk inside the 35% cap. What declines an application is thin income, a recent string of NSF items, or an existing payday loan taking the same paycheque.

How does applying work, with the clock on it?
Applying for small personal loans through BorrowNow takes about 15 minutes from the form to a signed agreement when you have your banking login at hand, and the money follows by Interac e-Transfer once the lender sends it. Here is the sequence with the clock on each step.
- Minutes 0 to 5, the form. Amount, your pay dates and how you are paid, your address and your email. One application goes to the lenders in our network that lend in your province. No hard credit pull at this stage.
- Minutes 5 to 7, the bank check. The lender that picks up your file sends a link to connect your bank account through a read-only check (IBV). It reads your deposits and balance, cannot move money, and takes about a minute. Have your online banking login ready.
- Minutes 7 to 12, the written offer. The offer shows the amount, the APR, each payment with its date and the total cost of borrowing. If any of those is missing, do not sign. A decline comes back the same way, usually with the reason.
- Minutes 12 to 15, the signature. You sign electronically and the lender schedules the e-Transfer. With Interac Autodeposit turned on in your banking app, the money lands without a security question; most borrowers see it within one business day, and many sooner.
Our guide to what you need to borrow money online in Canada covers what to have ready and what each screen asks for. If the loan is for a specific bill, the pages on borrowing for car repairs and borrowing for rent show the sizing for those cases.

Can you get small personal loans with bad credit?
Yes. Small personal loans are the part of the market where a low score matters least, because the loan is small, the term is short and the lender reads your deposits directly. A score in the 500s with steady pay usually gets an offer; a score in the 700s with no visible income usually does not.
Two things are true at once. The lender will probably price a bad-credit file at or near the 35% cap, so the $1,000 loan costs the $104.54 in the table rather than the $59.12 a prime borrower might pay. And the loan, repaid on time, is reported to Equifax or TransUnion by many lenders in the network, which is the cheapest positive line a borrower in that position can add to a credit file. A missed payment is reported the same way, so the sizing section above matters more for a bad-credit borrower than for anyone else.
If you have been declined by a bank or a credit union in the last year, start with our page on online loans for bad credit, which walks through what the bank check reads instead of the score and the six reasons an application comes back declined.
What happens if you cannot make a payment?
If a payment on small personal loans is going to bounce, call the lender before the date, because a moved payment costs a few dollars of extra interest while a returned one costs a fee at both ends. Three facts set the price of a missed payment.
- Your bank's NSF fee is capped at $10 for a returned pre-authorized debit, a federal rule in force since March 12, 2026 for the banks it covers.
- The lender's returned-payment fee is in your agreement. Ask for the number before you sign; it is one of the costs that counts toward the 35% ceiling.
- Interest keeps running at the agreement rate on the unpaid balance, never at a penalty rate above the cap.
Small personal loans do not roll over the way payday loans do: there is no new fee to push the whole balance to next month, and a lender cannot add a second loan on top to cover the first. What a lender can do is re-present the payment, report the missed instalment after 30 days, and, after repeated misses, send the account to collections. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada's guidance on personal loans covers your rights on fees and prepayment.

Which cheaper options should you try first?
Four routes can cover a $500 to $1,500 gap for less than any small personal loan, and each takes a phone call or a bank app to check. Try them in this order before you apply.
| Option | What $1,000 for 6 months costs | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Employer pay advance | $0 | Not every employer offers one; it comes off the next cheque |
| Payment plan with the biller | $0 to a small admin fee | Utilities, dentists and mechanics often split a bill over 2 to 6 months if asked |
| Arranged overdraft | A monthly fee of about $5 plus interest near 21% on what you use, roughly $90 to $135 over 6 months depending on how it clears | Needs bank approval in advance, and it tends to stay open |
| Credit union small loan | Often well under the cap | Membership and a fair credit file; a few days to fund |
| Small personal loan at the cap | $104.54 | The most it can cost; fixed end date |
| Payday loan | $140 per two weeks ($14 per $100) | Due in full next payday; 365% APR |
Borrowing from family sits outside the table because its price is personal, not financial; our guide on borrowing from family versus an online lender covers how to write it down so it does not cost the relationship. For $1,000 and up with a 600+ score, a peer-to-peer loan can beat the cap by a wide margin if you can wait a day or two.

Which provinces license small lenders?
The 35% APR ceiling applies in every province and territory, and five provinces add a licence for lenders that price above a lower line, which makes that licence the strongest scam filter a borrower of small personal loans has. A lender offering a high-cost loan without one is not a lender you sign with.
| Province | Extra licence for high-cost credit | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| British Columbia | Required above 32% APR | Consumer Protection BC licence search |
| Alberta | Required at 32% APR or more | Service Alberta licensed business search |
| Manitoba | Required above 32% | Consumer Protection Office, Manitoba (phone or email) |
| Quebec | Money lender and high-cost credit permits; the Consumer Protection Act also caps the credit rate near 35% | Office de la protection du consommateur |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | Required since June 1, 2024 | Digital Government and Service NL |
In Ontario, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and the three territories there is no separate high-cost licence, so the checks are the federal cap, the written disclosure and the business name on the agreement matching a real Canadian company. The lender must be allowed to lend where you live, not where its office sits. Our home page walks through the licence check in four steps with every register.
Which red flags should stop you before you sign?
A fee before the loan is paid out is the one sign that settles it: no lawful lender in Canada charges insurance, processing or release fees up front on small personal loans. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre lists the rest.
- Money first: any request to pay by e-Transfer, prepaid card, gift card or crypto before funding.
- Everyone approved: a promise of approval before the lender has seen your income.
- No written cost: an offer without the APR, the payment dates and the total cost in dollars.
- No company behind it: no legal business name, no Canadian address, no entry in the provincial register where one exists.
- Pressure: a deadline measured in minutes. A real offer waits a day.

Small personal loans FAQ
What is the smallest personal loan I can get in Canada?
Through BorrowNow's network the floor is $50; most non-bank lenders start at $100 to $500 and the big banks at $3,000 to $5,000. Loans under about $500 are usually repaid over two to four paycheques rather than in monthly instalments.
How much do small personal loans cost per month?
At the 35% legal cap, $500 over 3 months is $176.48 a month, $1,000 over 6 months is $184.09 and $1,500 over 12 months is $149.94. A lender charging less than the cap will show a lower payment on the written offer.
Can I get a small personal loan with bad credit?
Yes. Lenders in our network read your income through a bank check and consider any credit score. Expect a rate at or near the 35% cap, and expect the loan to be reported, which helps if every payment is made on time.
How long does it take to get the money?
About 15 minutes from the form to a signed agreement when you have your banking login ready, then an Interac e-Transfer from the lender. Most borrowers see the money within one business day, often sooner when they sign in the morning.
Does applying affect my credit score?
No. The application and the read-only bank check are soft steps. A lender may do a hard inquiry only when you accept a written offer, and the offer says so.
Can I repay small personal loans early?
Most online lenders allow extra payments and early payoff without a penalty, and interest stops on the amount you pay down. The prepayment terms are in the agreement; read that line before you sign.
What income counts for small personal loans?
Full-time or part-time employment income paid into your Canadian bank account. The lender reads the deposits through the bank check rather than asking for pay stubs.
Is a small personal loan better than a credit card cash advance?
For $500 to $1,500 that you can repay in 3 to 12 months, usually yes: the instalment loan has a fixed end date and a total cost in writing, while a cash advance charges interest from day one with no end date. If you can clear a card advance within a month, the card is cheaper.
